What Is NAIDOC Week?
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
We hold a flag raising ceremony followed by morning tea every year on July 11. Everyone in our community is welcome to attend and learn.
Our history
This event was started by Dr. Kevin (Uncle Dookie) O’Loughlin OAM. Now our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Project Officer, Misty Taylor, runs the event with the Warringga Committee. Community members, volunteers and staff support the day.
This tradition continues because culture matters. Respect matters. Learning together matters.
What To Expect
Flag Raising Ceremony
We raise the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags. Community members speak. We show respect for First Nations peoples.
This is a respectful ceremony. Children are welcome. We help them understand what’s happening.
Welcome to Country
A Traditional Owner or Elder provides Welcome to Country. This acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land we gather on.
Listen. Learn. Show respect.
Morning Tea
After the ceremony, we share morning tea together. Food and drinks provided. Meet community members. Talk together. Learn from each other.
Community Stalls
Local organisations set up stalls. Learn about:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander services
- Cultural programs
- Community support
- Local groups
Speakers and Performances
Guest speakers share knowledge. Sometimes we have cultural performances or activities. Each year is different based on the NAIDOC Week theme.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the first peoples of this land. Their culture is the oldest living culture in the world. NAIDOC Week honours this.
We gather to:
- Show respect for First Nations peoples
- Learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture
- Acknowledge past injustices
- Celebrate ongoing contributions
- Bring our community together
Culture and respect matter. This event creates space for learning and connection.
For families
Bring your children. They can learn about:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags and what they mean
- First Nations culture and history
- Why respect matters
- How to be part of reconciliation
This learning shapes how children see the world. It matters.
