What Is This Event?
A commemoration service we hold every August to honour ex-service people who fought in the Vietnam War. Started by Heather Hewitt and Vietnam Veterans Edinburgh.
We work in partnership with City of Salisbury and Vietnam Veterans Edinburgh to hold this event. Community members, volunteers and staff support the day.
Veterans deserve to be remembered. Service deserves to be honoured. This event creates space for both.
What To Expect
Commemoration Service
A respectful ceremony to honour those who served in the Vietnam War. This includes:
- Welcome and acknowledgements
- Speeches about service and sacrifice
- Moments of remembrance
- Recognition of veterans present
This is a dignified ceremony. Veterans are recognised for their service. Fallen comrades are remembered.
Lunch
After the service, we share lunch together. Food provided. Veterans, families and community members eat together. Share stories. Connect.
This time together matters. Veterans often feel their service wasn’t properly recognised. This event shows our community’s respect and gratitude.
Community Connection
Meet veterans. Hear their stories if they want to share. Understand this chapter of history. Show respect through your presence.
For veterans: meet other veterans who understand. Feel welcomed. Feel honoured. Know your service mattered.
For Veterans
You are welcome here. Your service is honoured here. Whether you’ve attended before or this is your first time, we’re glad you’re here.
Bring your family. Let them see you honoured. Let them understand your service.
Connect with other veterans who understand what you experienced.
For Families Of Veterans
Bring your veteran family members. This event honours their service. Your presence shows your support and pride.
If your veteran family member has passed, you’re still welcome. We remember them too.
Vietnam Veterans often didn’t receive the welcome they deserved when they returned home. Many felt their service wasn’t recognised or appreciated.
This event says: Your service mattered. You matter. We remember. We honour you.
We hold this event to:
- Honour veterans who served
- Remember those who didn’t return
- Acknowledge the sacrifice of service
- Educate younger generations
- Bring community together in respect
